Take Five: Fall Restaurant Openings

As the dog days of summer fade away, making way for the changing leaves of autumn, New York’s culinary world also undergoes a number of changes, including the opening of new restaurants, the revamping of menus, and the shifting of culinary staffs.  Gobbl is proud to highlight for you a few of the new restaurants that are slated to open later this year in New York City.

Pranna

The new pan-Asian restaurant Pranna, with innovative chef Chai Trivedi (previously of Long Island’s Sitar) at the helm,  promises to bring a “breath of life” to Madison Square Park in late August by serving up Indian-Asian fusion, the likes of minced shrimp and herb skewers.

Anticipated Opening: September 2008
Chef: Chai Trivedi
Cuisine: Asian
Designer Wid Chapman

Pranna, 79 Madison Avenue

Braeburn

Anticipated Opening: September 2008
Chef: Brian Bistrong

Brian Bistrong (previously of The Harrison and Bouley goes chef-owner in this new West Village venture with partner John Paul O’Neil.  The menu will focus entirely on seasonal ingredients, will offer vegetables from Bistrong’s home garden, and the food will be low-key American, infused with French cooking techniques.

SHO Shaun Hergatt

Chef Shaun Hergatt brings SHO to the Financial District this October.  Perhaps Hergatt’s noted sashimi expertise as well as the lively Australian-inspired fare expected to be served up at this Broad Street joint will enliven the Financial District’s typically torpid dining scene.

Chef: Shaun Hergatt
Cuisine: French/Asian
Designer: Denniston International

SHO Shaun Hergatt, 40 Broad Street

City Winery

The City Winery, slated to open in late fall will blend a wine bar and event space with a fully functional winery in NYC, claiming to be the first of its kind in a major urban area. The City Winery is sure to set the standard for a place of its kind as the trend of new urban wineries continues to grow.

Anticipated Opening: November 2008
Cuisine: Wine and Cheese Bar/Urban Winery
Designer: To be announced

City Winery, 143 Varick Street

Kefi

Attempting to revamp itself after having trouble settling in on the Upper Westside, Kefi will be moving the short distance to new digs on Columbus Avenue.  Perhaps a change of scenery will spice up the flavor and fare at this nouveau Greek establishment formerly known as Onera.  Be sure to explore their exclusively Greek wine list.

Anticipated Opening: September 2008 (New Location)
Chef: Michael Psilakis
Cuisine: Modern Greek
Designer: Matthew Sudock

Kefi, 505 Columbus Ave

  1. Kathie DeWitt Says:

Ate at Braeburn in October, it was an experience of delicate infusions. The creativity of Chef Bistrong is very impressive. The atmosphere is warm and inviting where contemporary and country are joined to create that modern home feeling. If you want a real treat, take friends and family to liven your taste buds to a new experience. I was amazed and enlightened.
