I joined my Village-dwelling friend Bill for an impromptu brunch this morning at Florent, his daily coffee stop. I arrived to find clusters of young families and old friends occupying this 24-hour French bistro diner, and on a Saturday morning, it was a blithe alternative to the bustling open-air eateries on 9th.
Having both lived in the south of France, Bill and I are big fans of prix fixe menus and were charmed by the very reasonable $15 brunch set. Though p.f.'s can be hit or miss, Florent didn't leave us feeling shortchanged at all. We both got started a bottomless cup of good, flavorful coffee (Bill found out that there's a pinch of cinnamon in their brew) and I had the eggs benedict with a side of home fries (potatoes were ok; will opt for French fries next time). The Hollandaise-glazed poached eggs over the sweet Canadian bacon were a tasty, leisurely way to start the day.
The prix fixe also included a choice of a breakfast drink or dessert, and we both opted for the latter upon seeing the varied dessert list. I had the pear and fig pie to inaugurate pie season, but the layers of fruit topped with a crispy crumble would have been better served warm. I tried Bill's crème caramel, which was smooth, consistent and delicious.
The service was a bit spotty and uninspired, but I have no real complaints since the dishes were quick to the table and the beverages were constantly refreshed. Florent is a cute diner with that Village whimsy and nonchalance that makes you want to go back for more, say like at 5 am on Sunday morning. And in that case, take heed of the disclaimer on the menu: they don't serve alcohol before noon on Sundays.
